David López está dispuesto a pasar su experiencia a la próxima generación del equipo Sky después de extender su contrato

  • David Lopez is looking forward to passing his experience on to the new crop of Team Sky riders after extending his contract

The 36 year old is heading into his sixth year with the team and he told TeamSky.com that he is relishing his role as one of the more experienced members of the squad.

He said: “At this point, I’m trying to continue at the same level, supporting the team. The team is always improving, there are good riders coming, and they always need some help.

“Next year we have a lot of new young riders so hopefully they will ask me to work with them, and teach them how we work as a team. It’s a good role.

“I enjoy it. I arrived in the team at the same time as [Ian] Boswell, and we grew together with the team. After five years together he told me he’d learnt some good things from me… It’s nice.

“I think it’s also good for younger guys when they see riders who have helped win the Tour or the Vuelta and then they are helping them in slightly smaller races.”

Lopez enjoyed a strong 2017 and capped it off by racing alongside the victorious Chris Froome at the Vuelta a Espana.

“The Vuelta was really good,” he continued. “Of course it’s always really good when you win. But all of the riders did a good job and the team was really happy with us at the end of a long season.

“It feels like a home race for me, too. I know most of the roads at the Vuelta - they don’t change so much. Also, some of the stages were close to where I live and I had a lot of friends and family come to visit.”
